Description

HUNGRY EYE was inspired by my teacher and mentor, Sr. Corita Kent. It comes from a series of my artworks that mix photo collage with lettering made from my own hand-carved rubber eraser stamps which I first created in Sr. Corita’s night class. This was my first photomontage, and I was excited to mix diverse elements and alphabets to create the artwork.

In this piece, I have used a variety of images, including:  a family photo of my mother and aunt, photos of Kathakali dancers of Southern India, Eadweard Muybridge’s Figures In Motion, and photos of the Chicago riots.

The text comes from Poem #5 of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s Pictures of the Gone World. It describes an artist’s calling: to look at everything, to take it all in, and to create artwork.

These prints are the original, limited edition signed and numbered lithographs from 1971, not reprints.
