Artist’s Notes

Judas’s betrayal was difficult to portray.

The moon shines through an ominous, misty sky, illuminating the scene below. Judas, in blue and purple, embraces Jesus. He carries the purse with its 30 silver coins. Christ, understanding what will happen, allows the events to unfold. In the background, a disciple cuts off a soldier’s ear. Within the darkness, soldiers march in crimson armor with swords drawn, sparks from their phosphorescent torches light their way through the trees. Three soldiers stand in the foreground holding back vicious dogs.

Hay besos que parecen azucenas
por sublimes, ingenuos y por puros,
hay besos traicioneros y cobardes,
hay besos maldecidos y perjuros.

Judas besa a Jesús y deja impresa
en su rostro de Dios, la felonía,
mientras la Magdalena con sus besos
fortifica piadosa su agonía.

Desde entonces en los besos palpita
el amor, la traición y los dolores,
en las bodas humanas se parecen
a la brisa que juega con las flores.

Besos, Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957)
Poet, Nobel Laureate

Because Swanson printed giclee editions in smaller batches, only those printed during his lifetime are signed by the artist. The remaining prints from the edition are made using the same image he created and approved, but with his signature printed where he would have signed them.
