Description

The central image in this poster began as a study for a commissioned artwork. Swanson’s friends, Richard and Gail Mynatt, owned a popular bakery in Santa Monica, California, which was having a four year anniversary. They asked him to make a black and white drawing for use as a poster. The image used for the posters can be seen in the Buttery posters; Swanson later developed a sketch into this watermedia painting in 1985, and called it Bakers.

The hand-drawn lettering incorporates messages from Pope Francis, Fr. Daniel Berigan, S.J., and the parable of Lazarus and Dives from the Gospel of Luke.
